Why Take an Acting Class?

Lauren Letherer teaching two adult acting students, in the Acting Basics Class for Beginners, at FUSION ABQ.

I have spent the last week talking to people about their desire to sign up for an acting class.

They all have various reasons. One being - the film industry in NM is growing by the day, and they want to jump in and be a part of the process.

But you don’t need to have the drive to be a professional actor to take a class. The one thing that all potential students have in common is a yearning for self-expression.

All too often as adults we lose that impulse to feel fully. Growing up, society has honed us down to acceptable levels of emotion. “Don’t be too loud, watch your tone, that isn’t ladylike, don’t get so upset, don't embarrass yourself..." On and on until you feel so walled in by expectations that you become numb.

It’s not just you, I believe it’s a condition that we all suffer from.

Sometimes it is just a simple act of doing something different. Trying something new. Being brave and stepping outside your comfort zone. Listening to that tiny voice inside your creative soul that is longing to be seen.

Don’t let “Shouldn’t” stop you. "Should" is "Could" attached to shame.

Doing something new is brave and bold, and regardless of the outcome it will change the way you view the world. So, trust that impulse. Whether it is acting, or some other creative endeavor - You will be changed by the sheer boldness of the adventure.

I spent years denying my passion in favor of what was realistic or pragmatic. If you are stuck in that never-ending doubt, I will help you break through those obstacles. It is time to leap.

I promise it'll be worth it.
